Intelligence: Above Average (Despite many shortcomings in his professional and personal life, he does exhibit many qualities of a legitimately skilled detective. His advances into the ice truck killer case were so major that they led to Brian personally attempting unsuccessfully to kill him. He wanted to pursue the case involving Mike Anderson’s murder more even after it was closed by the department, knowing that there was likely more to uncover, but this push was halted by Deb’s authority. During the investigation on the Doomsday Killer case, he noticed several aspects in the respective residences of those he questioned like Gellar’s works that his partner Quinn didn’t notice and pointed towards the people getting questioned having some sort of connection to Gellar, on one occasion he was knocked out by Travis after he questioned Beth Dorsey on why she had so many of Gellar’s books if her husbands involvement was just a big joke. Was chosen as detective sergeant for Homicide after Doakes’s demise, and would’ve been chosen as Lieutenant if Matthews wasn’t trying to get one over on Laguerta by picking an under experienced Debra Morgan. Would later become even more decorated as seen in New Blood.)
