~ Green Lantern |
Summary[]
Growing up in Detroit (according to Dwayne McDuffie), John Stewart initially led a relatively uneventful life until joining the military, fighting alongside Rex Mason who would later become the dynamic superhero Metamorpho. Similar to his buddy, John found himself in a position to become a super-powered hero when the Guardians of the Universe, recognizing his phenomenal strength of will, granted him a Green Lantern Power Ring. For over ten years, John would patrol the deepest reaches of space as a Green Lantern, combatting evil and injustice wherever he found it. Years later, following the death of fellow Lantern Abin Sur (and Sur's ring's transferal to Kyle Rayner, a fellow Earthman), John would return to Earth to serve as its Green Lantern as Rayner completed his Lantern training on Oa. A while later, John would ally himself with six of Earth's greatest heroes (including newcomers Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter) to repel an invasion of Earth by the Imperium's army. Afterward, John and those six heroes would form the Justice League, a team dedicated to battling injustice and cruelty wherever it exists.
Powers and Stats[]
Tier: High 6-A to 5-B
Name: John Stewart, also known as the Green Lantern of Sector 2814
Origin: The DC Animated Universe
Gender: Male
Age: In his Early 40s, according to Dwayne McDuffie
Classification: Human, Green Lantern (Member of the Honor Guard), Founding Member of the Justice League
Powers and Abilities:
- Superhuman Physical Characteristics (See Striking Strength, Lifting Strength and Speed)
- Empowerment (Is empowered by his Green Lantern Ring)
- Flight (Can fly at blinding speeds, especially in space)
- Enhanced Senses (Only a Lantern can hear a certain frequency emitted by their ring)
- Indomitable Will (As a Green Lantern, he is nearly singular in his strength of will)
- Instinctive Reactions (Instantly shielded himself and his teammates from Anti-Life in an act of “pure instinct”)
- Energy Projection (Can fire beams and blasts of emerald light to damage enemies - these beams can be wide and destructive, focused laser cutters, or take the form of omnidirectional energy bursts)
- Creation (The GL ring can cause its energy to take any shape, such as a catapult, large fists, various hands, a bridge, a large maze, an apparition of a ghost, among many others - the ring can create essentially anything he can imagine, so this list is far from all-encompassing)
- Forcefield Creation (Said constructs include barriers and other such force fields)
- Weapon Creation (Has created an axe, a hammer, a buzzsaw, a sword, a scalpel, a mech suit that could fire missiles, among other weapons)
- Paralysis Inducement (Can restrain foes with various constructs - he can create a restraint that gags opponents, which could prove useful when fighting enemies whose powers depend on their speech)
- BFR (Can catapult things into the distance, and while brainwashed was capable of putting a shield around an item and then propelling it into the sun)
- Phasing (Kyle Rayner's ring allowed him to phase through a building)
- Psuedo-Telekinesis (With his ring, can lift and move things)
- Danmaku (AMAZO, upon recreating GL's ring, demonstrated the ability to fire dozens of blasts instantly)
- Explosion Manipulation (Created RPG round constructs that released fiery explosions upon detonation)
- Weapon Mastery (with his Ring, as well as with various types of firearms due to his time as a marine)
- Heat Manipulation (Kilowog's lantern beam melted metal, sealing a large door)
- Hand-to-Hand Combat Skills (Served in the marines, and contended with Vandal Savage, who has been a warrior since the time of Cro-Magnons)
- Weapon Control (Can call his ring back to him even if it is taken off of his person)
- Automatic Translation (His ring automatically translates any and all languages in its database for his convenience)
- Hammerspace (Keeps his Lantern in an other-dimensional storage space, from which he can retrieve it at any time)
- Decoy Creation (Created a decoy construct of himself to distract Sinestro and Killer Frost)
- Vehicular Mastery (Avoided submachine gun fire on a motorcycle)
- Acrobatics (Did flips to avoid flame blasts from Metamorpho)
- Negation of Darkness Manipulation (Negated The Shade’s sentient shadows, absorbing them)
- Limited Technopathy (Boosted the signal of a distress call from the Watchtower)
- Limited Energy Absorption (Absorbed all the power contained within Oa's Central Power Battery, and took in Static's electricity as a substitute for his typical ring energy)
- Limited Teleportation (Can request to be recalled to the JLU Watchtower)
- Possible Illusion Creation (His ring should behave similarly to Sinestro's, which could make him appear to be GL)
- Possible Light Manipulation (Lantern energy is implied to be light several times, as detailed here)
GL's Constructs (including the skintight energy barrier he places upon himself) can resist:
- Existence Erasure (Shielded himself and a few other Leaguers from the Anti-Life Equation, which erases things from existence)
- Time Manipulation (GL, as well as his teammates who were enveloped in his ring energy, were unaffected by Vandal Savage drastically altering the past)
- Matter Manipulation (His shield construct withstood a beam from Brainiac's mothership, which digitized solid objects)
- Sound Manipulation (Created a construct that endured Silver Banshee’s screech)
- Extreme Heat (Jessica Cruz' constructs were unaffected by being extremely close to the sun. Withstood holding back a wall of flames, as well as Volcana's blasts of fire and Dreamslayer's flame)
- Radiation Manipulation (GL and his constructs are unaffected by the ambient radiations of space, as seen in his spaceflights like at the end of “In Blackest Night” or his journey to Kalanor in “Hearts and Minds." A barrier of his effectively insulated Supergirl against Kryptonite radiation)
- Electricity Manipulation (Could shield against electricity from Static)
Attack Potency: Multi-Continental to Planet Level (Is capable of adjusting the power of his beams, as shown in a few examples - for one, he could fire a beam that only knocked Metamorpho down, whereas a swing from Hawkgirl (who scales far below GL) ripped apart Metamorpho's head, and on one occasion he fired a beam that didn't even knock out the Dee Dee Twins. See Note 2 as for his antifeats. Repeatedly demonstrated to be evenly matched with Sinestro, whose ring is capable of destroying planets according to writer Stan Berkowitz. Was capable of beam struggling with, clashing evenly with, and eventually defeating Despero - whilst using portions of the flame of Py’tar likely equal to or smaller than what Despero himself wielded, his followers could cover entire planets in energy almost instantly. This scaling to Despero easily scales him above other Lanterns, such as Kilowog, Katma Tui, and others who were easily dealt with and overpowered by Kalanorians who wielded at most equal amounts of the flame of Py’tar as Despero did. This is relevant because while extremely fatigued, a group of about a dozen fodder Lanterns (including Katma and Kilowog) would have accomplished this feat - that, and according to Star Boy, Lanterns should be capable of contributing to this feat. See Note 2 about the "inconsistency" of lesser lanterns. Was able to majorly contribute to re-charging the Watchtower's central power core - despite the fact that the second Watchtower's power core's energy output was only comparable to a small nuclear weapon, the first Watchtower's core contained much more energy - it was able to create a shield that turned aside almost all of the impact from a phenomenon more powerful than a Solar Flare, Solar Flares on average being Continent Level+. Wields a Green Lantern ring, which is stated to possibly be the mightiest weapon in the universe (with the officially licensed JLU Heroclix sets implying it's the most powerful) - even if it isn't THE most powerful, having it even be up for debate is nothing to scoff at. Temporarily downed Justice Lord Hawkgirl with a single blast - Justice Lords being equal to their main universe counterparts. Overpowered Season 3 Static in a beam struggle while Static was giving “all (he) got” - a younger Static being capable of performing a casual Small Town Level feat. Scales above Wonder Woman (and thus Hawkgirl) for several reasons, as argued here. Can destroy Imperium army ships with single blasts. Helped slice Brainiac's building-sized ship in half. Far more powerful than Fodder GLs, who can slice huge ships in half, cause large cave-ins, destabilize building-sized masses of stone by slicing their foundation apart like butter, etc. See here for my reasoning as to why DCAU Superman is not Low Complex Multiversal)
Speed: Relativistic combat speed (Scales to/above 0.1c: Twice reacted to beams from Sinestro at a few meters' range and very close range respectively, which (even if we for some reason say they're different from other lantern beams) we know move at the Speed of Light. Kept up with Hro Talak, who reacted to and repelled several Lantern Beams, as well as keeping up with Hawkgirl who redirected lightning. He, as well as characters comparable to himself, have reacted to, dodged, and blocked Lantern Beams, as compiled here - in particular, Wonder Woman (who GL scales to in speed) was capable of moving this fast while doing so. Comparable to Wonder Woman, who has reacted to and blocked blasts from Laser Rifles as well as blocked Laser Beams from Imperium army Walkers. During “Fallen Hero,” was overtly competitive in combat speed with Static, who was capable of reacting to and blocking a light-based laser at close range after it was fired, as well as fight characters who could dodge his electric bolts, which are this fast. Perceived and somewhat weaved around beams of red-hot radiation from Brimstone. Reacted to and blocked sniper fire), possibly MFTL+ (It's possible that Lanterns' travel speed scales to their combat speed, though personally I've never seen any arguments for that which were nearly compelling enough for me to claim it's definitive), and Speed of Light attack speed with Lantern Beams (Explained here)
His flight speed varies, between Massively Hypersonic within Earth’s atmosphere (Upscales from Mach 106: Is overtly slower than he is in space, as he believes it’ll take him two minutes to go between two locations on Earth, which wouldn’t be true if GL could fly at even baseline light speed in the Earth’s atmosphere. Is superior to Jessica Cruz in power output, and as such should at least equal her in-atmosphere flight speed, which enabled her to go between timezones in 78 seconds. He could also catch up to an ICBM in its boost phase, which generally move at about 4 km/s, or Mach 11.6) and Massively FTL+ in space (Towed the Javelin to Earth from the "other side of the galaxy." Flew from Earth to Kalanor in less than a week, as shown in "Hearts and Minds" - Kalanor, according to Kilowog, is in a remote part of the Milky Way. Flew from Rigel IX to Earth in some unknown period of time (it’s strongly implied to be since J’onn summoned him, which would have been just minutes ago, but even at worst it would have to be less than 15 years considering when he became a GL) - the name Rigel IX implies it orbits the star Rigel, which is 863 light years away from Earth. He and other Lanterns have very quickly moved between Oa and Earth - with Oa, in DC lore, existing at the center of the Universe) - though it does not seem entirely consistent with the rest of his speed scaling, it should be noted that GL was capable of moving around in a dimension that was beyond space and time, which could be interpreted as Immeasurable speed.
Lifting Strength: At least Class 1, likely Class 5 physically (Was even in a blade clash struggle with a bloodlusted Hro Talak - Hro is at least as strong lifting-strength-wise as Hawkgirl, but for a higher end, as explained here, he can possibly be argued to be Class 100 - however, whether or not this is consistent for GL's ring-enhanced physicals is debatable. Burst out of a pile of roughly palm-sized rubble. Lifted and threw Amanda Waller several meters with no leverage), Class M with constructs (His constructs should be just as strong as, if not stronger than, Kyle Rayner's - Kyle could lift and throw the top of a massive rock formation. Slowed a huge train down. Lifted a massive piece of machinery. Created a catapult that sent a massive tower flying across a city. Caught a thrown bus. Tore a large slab of rock (with tents and people on it) from the ground and carried it elsewhere. His construct LS should also compare to that of Sinestro’s - Sinestro having sufficient lifting strength to support an entire train and toss around a tank. Sent tons of scrap metal presumably into orbit. Should be superior to Kilowog and Katma Tui, whose individual ring beams could casually lift a tank and raise up a huge slab of rock respectively. Effortlessly lifted a huge van. Casually lifted a car. Bent a slab of metal instantly), possibly Class Y (Scaling to a very small portion of holding the sun together - however, while I think this applies AP-wise, I think it's not quite consistent for these constructs to have this level of lifting strength, considering feats like GL struggling to stop a train and being incapable of sending a tower into orbit - however, for posterity's sake I'm going to list it as a possible end)
Striking Strength: Multi-Continent Class to Planet Class (Harmed Despero through his barrier with ring-enhanced punches. Should be at least as strong striking-wise as Kyle Rayner, who, due to his ring amplifying his strength, could notably hurt Sinestro with punches - Sinestro being capable of withstanding construct attacks from this same enraged Kyle without his energy barrier being active)
Durability: Multi-Continental to Planet Level (Generally surrounds himself in a skin-tight barrier of Lantern energy - this has enabled him to take a blast from a bloodlusted version of himself. Took attacks from Despero, who clashed evenly with him several times. More powerful than Kilowog - while basically dead and unconscious, Kilowog's will could stil create a skintight barrier that no-sold an impact that created a crater as deep as a skyscraper), just as if not more durable with Constructs and Barriers (Blocked a blast from the Trident of Poseidon, which is composed of nearly all the magical energy on the planet in an age where magic was commonly practiced. Repeatedly blocked attacks from those comparable to him, and held off Lobo's punches. Was capable of temporarily restraining initial resurrection Solomon Grundy (who could break Vixen's arm in one blow and is stronger than his past self, who is as strong or stronger than Martian Manhunter), though the beast eventually broke out of the restraint. Blocked an axe strike from Mongul. No-sold the Javelin's crash landing), with far lower durability without his barrier (Can be temporarily KO'd by War Wheel cannons, a swing from Hawkgirl, and a bomb that only had the power to blow up a city block - as shown in "Wild Cards." He was also staggered by falling debris in this scene - it's true his barrier is up when the debris starts falling, but you can also see that the barrier seems to come apart as the debris falls, likely due to the distraction disrupting his concentration. He does take a blast from Sinestro without his barrier up, but the context of this episode is that Sinestro wanted to keep John alive and torment him by ruining his reputation, and as such Sinestro would be adjusting his power to not kill John)
Stamina: At least Athletic, likely Peak Human (His training with both the marines and Green Lanterns would logically have trained him to fight strenuous battles for long periods of time. Fought intense battles with Hro Talak and Despero. Held out against AMAZO despite being clearly outmatched)
Range: Hundreds of Meters with Constructs (Made a humongous maze construct. Created a huge dome to cover up a canyon-sized crater. Caught a bus from extremely far away with a hand construct. Created a massive construct to contain a raging fire) and Hundreds of Meters with Lantern Beams (Covered a passenger train in his beam. Fired his beam a tremendous distance to slice Brainiac's ship in half. His beam stretched down this far to grab the Batwing. Grabbed a car from far away. Grabbed Hawkgirl's mace from far away. Extended a beam very far to cause soldiers to scatter. In this scene, his beam seems to extend about ten meters)
Standard Equipment:
- Green Lantern Power Ring: One of the most powerful and versatile weapons in existence, the Green Lantern Ring can create virtually anything, limited only by the wearer's imagination and strength of will - from more generic things like bursts and beams of powerful emerald light, to an infinite amount of hard-light constructs. Aside from its direct offensive applications, the ring provides its wearer with the ability to freely fly, a skintight barrier of energy that allows the wielder to breathe in any environment and shrug off extreme temperatures and cosmic radiations, as well as an automatic translation of any speech into the native language of the wielder - among other less combat-applicable functions.
- Optional Equipment:
- GL Power Battery: A literal Green Lantern, this object channels a nigh-infinite reserve of energy and is therefore used to recharge a GL's power ring via exclaiming the iconic Green Lantern oath.
- Can Create/Summon: Several types of constructs
Intelligence: At least Above Average, with incredible combat prowess (Is an extremely experienced and well-trained military officer and Green Lantern. Kept up in combat skill with Hro Talak, one of Thanagar's foremost warriors)
Standard Tactics: As a very no-nonsense person, John will generally go straight for his enemy, aiming to incapacitate or restrain them as quickly as possible.
Weaknesses: His ring needs to be recharged every 24 hours. If his ring is somehow taken off his person, he reverts to a relatively normal human - a highly trained marine, but a human nonetheless. However, as detailed above, he can call his ring back to his person even if it's removed. Disrupting his strength of will dulls his powers - and his will can be disrupted by distractions, as seen here where his barrier fades away when he's taken off guard by falling debris.
Note: Bruce Timm has stated that the original DCAU tie-in comics are not canon, with the only tie in comics that have statements to the contrary (other than Batman: The Adventures Continue, which has so many continuity issues that it's essentially impossible to argue it's canon) being Justice League Infinity, the Batman and Harley Quinn tie in comics, and specifically the first annual of Batman Adventures. Ergo, I only consider those three comics canon.
Note 2: Many of the characters in the DCAU, due to differing writer opinions on how high they scale, have a handful of antifeats - GL's including him not knowing if he can contain a city block level explosion and being knocked out by shrapnel from an explosion. I understand that these antifeats are glaring, but trust me, when you tally up the number of feats it's infinitely more consistent (both with GL's own feats and the many characters he scales to) for GL to scale to the level I scaled him to.
