Description
To quote Wikipedia:
"Intelligence has been defined in many different ways such as in terms of one's capacity for logic, abstract thought, understanding, self-awareness, communication, learning, emotional knowledge, memory, planning, creativity and problem solving. It can also be more generally described as the ability to perceive information and retain it as knowledge for applying to itself or other instances of knowledge or information, thereby creating referable understanding models of any size, density, or complexity, due to any conscious or subconscious imposed will or instruction to do so."
Therefore, intelligence is mostly subjective towards the circumstance. However, many attempts have been made to quantify intelligence, both in real life and in fiction. While the topic of "Who's more intelligent?" or "How intelligent are they?" is often a matter for debate both in real life and in fiction, there are a number of different ways in which we can categorize intelligence and compare intelligence feats, thereby allowing us to come to a general understanding and agreement on which level of intelligence is considered "greater" than others, and by proxy, which characters are generally perceived as more intelligent than others, especially with regards to being able to put their intelligence to use in a combat setting. This page is intended to be used for just such an occasion.
Recommended Levels
Despite variables, some suggested intelligence levels are as follows:
- Non-Sentient: Characters are unable to recognize stimuli consciously, thus missing the most fundamental form of cognition and any awareness with association or interpretation.
- Learning Impaired: Characters have difficulties in acquiring and utilizing a range of skills, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning, or mathematical abilities, due to their intelligence. These difficulties can be likened to brain dysfunction, particularly affecting cognitive functions.
- Below Average: Characters that show lower cognitive ability than the norm, but do not particularly stand out in any intellectual or academic fields.
- Average: Regular I.Q. and no exceptional abilities or displays, nor cognitive ability
- Above Average: Characters that show greater cognitive ability than the norm, but do not particularly stand out in any intellectual or academic fields.
- Gifted: Characters that demonstrate high reasoning ability, demonstrating proficiency of complex concepts with minimal repetition, and display high performance capability in intellectual, creative, or specific academic fields.
- Genius: Characters with exceptional insight in the performance of some art or endeavor that surpasses expectations, potentially sets new standards for the future, establishes better methods of operation, or remains outside the capabilities of competitors. Genius is associated with intellectual ability and creative productivity emerging from the remarkable capacity to apply creativity and imaginative thinking across diverse contexts. This definition operates under the premise that we are set in our current era of human progress, marked by our current level of academic advancement, or a period akin to our contemporary level of academic achievement.
- Extraordinary Genius: Far above real world human intelligence in multiple fields of research. Usually capable of inventing futuristic technology.
- Supergenius: Vastly superhuman intelligence in virtually all fields of research.
Notes
- 1: The Genius level definition does not exclude the possibility of characters being rated as a genius if the verse's setting is not akin to our time period, with our academic achievements. Rather, it's simply a conventional approach to defining genius intelligence by assessing achievements and competition within the context of our era.
- 2: It's important to provide explanations for the intelligence ratings within parentheses on a page. We encourage this, even when it's challenging to describe such aspect. If it's not possible to articulate it, we recommend leaving the rating as ''Unknown''.
