Knuckles the Echidna, simply referred to as Knuckles by those who know him, is a supporting character from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is the last remaining descendant of the Knuckles Clan and is the current guardian of the Master Emerald, a powerful ancient relic that is his solemn duty to protect from anyone seeking to abuse its power. This is what led him to first meet Sonic and Tails upon their initial meeting on Angel Island, misguided by Eggman's trickery into making him believe Sonic was after the mystical artifact he was charged with. Knuckles would eventually see the mad scientist for who he really was, teaming up with the heroic duo to stop Eggman's plot to steal the Master Emerald for himself. Their success would result in Sonic gaining an ally in the echidna, who would become the hedgehog's longest-standing rival to date.
A loner by nature, Knuckles is the antithesis to his rival; where Sonic is the wind blowing free, Knuckles is the mountain that remains immovable. He is independent, headstrong, and oftentimes has a stoicism that clashes with those around him. Due to his solitude, he is also gullible and short-tempered to a fault. But he is entirely devoted to his duty, thus spending most of his time on Angel Island protecting the Master Emerald. But when his friends and others need his help, however, Knuckles can always be relied on to leave his post and prove himself a faithful and good-hearted hero against threats that threaten the world.
