~ Martian Manhunter looking back on his time as a Leaguer |
Summary[]
Born on Mars hundreds of years ago, J'onn J'onnz lived a happy life with his wife and child before the Imperium and its army attacked his homeworld, devastating it and even stealing their shape-shifting abilities. Much later, during a space expedition, J'onn would be taken to Earth and imprisoned for many years, before telepathically reaching out to Earth's Greatest Hero, Superman, for help. After being freed, J'onnz joined Superman (and five other heroes) in forming a united front against the Imperium's army's invasion of Earth, successfully defeating their foe. This event lead J'onnz and the other six heroes to form the Justice League, a team dedicated to battling injustice and cruelty wherever it exists.
Powers and Stats[]
Tier: High 6-A to 5-B, higher with Increased Density
Name: J'onn J'onnz, referred to sparingly as the Martian Manhunter
Origin: The DC Animated Universe
Gender: Male
Age: Several hundred years old, according to Dwayne McDuffie
Classification: Martian, Founding Member of the Justice League
Powers and Abilities:
- Superhuman Physical Characteristics (See Attack Potency, Speed, Lifting Strength, and Durability)
- Flight (Can fly faster than the speed of sound)
- Superhuman Athleticism (Performed a superhuman leap)
- Combat Expertise (Was a prominent soldier in the battle against the Imperium's army for many years, and has many years of experience being a superhero (fighting powerful threats such as Hades, Solomon Grundy, and the like) under his belt. Expertly uses his unique powers to defeat foes, such as using his intangibility to make ships fire on each other in their attempts to hit him, using a mental attack on Etrigan mid-combat to incapacitate him, becoming a puddle of liquid metal to take his foes by surprise, among other examples. Proficiently used a nunchaku-esque weapon during "Starcrossed")
- Extrasensory Perception (Detected a "homing signal" from within a dimensional rift)
- Telepathy (His (as well as his alternate counterpart's, which shouldn't be too much more powerful than his own) telepathy is so powerful that he could detect signals coming from Dimensional Aberrations, comprehend and withstand widespread Multiversal Destruction, detect and comprehend a construct that existed beyond traditional concepts of Space and Time, sense Green Lantern's thoughts across interstellar space, find the Life Equation by rooting through Wonder Woman's psyche, as well as detect Batman's precise location on Earth whilst on the Watchtower)
- Indomitable Will (Withstood a sensation that he described as "as if a million universes are forcing their way into my mind all at once," and kept using his Telepathy during this excruciating experience. While weakened and having his energies drained via a tentacle piercing into his head, remained lucid and pulled the Imperium into the light of day)
- Mind Manipulation (J'onn can harm foes with mental attacks - by forcing people to relive their worst memories, ripping through their psyche to find information, or by funneling horrifying images into their mind; these mental attacks are potent enough to cause Overman to essentially enter a catatonic state and to inflict horrible brain damage on Kragger by ripping through his mind for intel during "Starcrossed")
- Shapeshifting (Can modify his form to a seemingly unlimited extent, like to impersonate others, turn into monsters, turn into liquid metal to avoid attacks, or to turn metallic to enhance his durability. Notably, his boots, trunks, and cape are all just his shapeshifted body, yet seem to have the properties and feel of cloth, implying an incredible level of shapeshifting)
- Memory Manipulation (Can wipe two years' worth of memories from a man's mind at a moment's notice)
- Invisibility (Turned invisible to get the drop on Etrigan. Disappeared on Superman and Lois by turning invisible)
- Elasticity (Has a self-malleable constitution, allowing him to stretch to attack foes or to squash himself into a puddle to avoid attacks)
- Regeneration (High-Mid: Regenerated from having been ripped in half. Instantly regenerated from Metamorpho slicing his head off)
- Intangibility (Can phase through solid objects as a consequence of making his density practically nonexistent. He can even do this to objects he's touching, such as when he caused the space suit he was wearing to also be intangible)
- Durability Negation (Can use his phasing ability to ignore durability, such as when he phased through a Manhunter's head and tore its brain out, phased through the chests of two Imperium army soldiers to kill them, phased through Brainiac's heavy gun to destroy it, among other examples)
- Density Manipulation (Can amplify his density to enhance his physical attacks and to become more durable - his intangibility is also an extreme application of his density manipulation, as in him making his density practically nonexistent)
- Forcefield Creation (Can use his heightened-density blue aura and spread it out farther than his body, which he used to essentially put a barrier up to protect Hawkgirl)
- Dream Walking (Entered Superman, Green Lantern, and The Flash's dreams during "Only a Dream" to free them from Doctor Destiny's manipulations)
- Psychic Shadow (Telepathically shielded Batman from being detected by the Imperium and its forces)
- Large Size via Shapeshifting (Type 0: Turned into this beast while fighting his Justice Lord Self)
- BFR (Helped throw Solomon Grundy a tremendous distance)
- Natural Weaponry (Conventional: His transformations can give him claws and fangs)
- Mind Control (An officially licensed trading card for Justice League tells us that Martian Manhunter can "control the will of others" - he never uses this in any of his canon appearances, but given his character it's safe to assume this is for moral reasons)
- Size Manipulation (Can turn himself into a small puddle that resembles metal, albeit he doesn't seem to be capable of attacking in this form)
- Vocal Mimicry (Perfectly mimics the voice of the people he shapeshifts into, such as Superman and Henry Moss - this could possibly be a result of J'onn shapeshifting so completely that he perfectly replicates someone's vocal chords)
- Multiple Languages (Fluently speaks English, Hindi (as can be inferred by him living in New Delhi and having many conversations with people there), Martian, the Imperium army's language, and likely far more considering his travels across the world where he's impersonated many people)
- Enhanced Swimming (Can seemingly use his power of flight underwater to swim very quickly)
- Vehicular Mastery (with a Javelin, which he piloted expertly to shoot down a Brainiac ship)
- Limited Acrobatics (Flipped to escape a car explosion)
- Likely Self-Sustenance (Type 1: Doesn't appear to need any sort of breathing apparatus underwater, and lived on Mars which has an atmosphere that is less than one percent Oxygen)
- Negation of Mind Manipulation/Illusion Creation (Freed Superman from Doctor Destiny's illusion. However, powerful enough Mind Manipulation can take him over, such as the extremely potent Heart of Darkness during "Eclipsed")
- Limited Teleportation (Can request to be recalled to the JLU Watchtower)
- Situational Resistance to Mind Reading (Martians cannot read one another's' minds)
- Resistance to Illusion Creation (Sensed that something was wrong, and with the help of his Earth-D counterpart, saw through AMAZO II’s illusion)
Attack Potency: Multi-Continental to Planet Level (See Note as to why this profile doesn't scale him to Superman. Physically overwhelmed and beat down the Annihilator, which Wonder Woman could not even budge and was later ragdolled by - the Annihilator also beat down Atom Smasher, who has connective scaling to Wonder Woman. Harmed (with a stomp attack) Hades, an Olympian God who effortlessly overpowered and smacked away Wonder Woman. Struck Lobo with enough force to daze him - not only could Lobo effortlessly outmuscle Wonder Woman, he also stomped Kalibak who easily defeated Wonder Woman. Threw Metallo with enough force to knock Kalibak off his feet. Punched through a Brainiac drone. Knocked a massive mutant snake out in a single blow. Flew through a super-advanced fighter jet built by Vandal Savage. See here for my reasoning as to why DCAU Superman is not Low Complex Multiversal), higher with Increased Density (Harmed a mid-evolution Doomsday) - his phasing can be used to ignore durability, as shown here.
Speed: Relativistic combat speed and reactions (While disguised as Clayface, moved at some appreciable percent of a beam construct from Sinestro (these beam-propelled constructs moving at the Speed of Light) with his own attack. Scales in speed to Wonder Woman for the following two reasons: he could blitz the Annihilator with a punch despite it being capable of striking quickly enough to blitz Wonder Woman (with it never being implied Faust made the Annihilator any faster), and he could avoid attacks from Giganta who has the speed to tag an on-guard Wonder Woman (see "Secret Society" and "To Another Shore") and tag a battle-ready Hawkgirl. As such, he should scale to the verse's general speed scaling, including Wonder Woman moving this fast and the over-a-dozen feats of comparable characters dodging or deflecting Lantern Beams (which move at the speed of light), an extremely red-sun weakened Superman blocking a light-based laser after it was fired, Static blocking a beam of light at relatively close range after it was fired, and Wonder Woman's own feats of deflecting laser blasts from Imperium soldiers as well as lasers from an Imperium army ship, not to mention dodging a laser from an Imperium Walker. Reacted to an ICBM in its terminal phase and phased through it. Contorted his body to avoid gunfire after it was fired), possibly MFTL+ (It's possible that Lanterns' travel speed scales to their combat speed, though personally I've never seen any arguments for that which were nearly compelling enough for me to claim it's definitive) - though it does not seem entirely consistent with the rest of his speed scaling, it should be noted that J’onn was capable of moving around in a dimension that was beyond space and time, which could be interpreted as Immeasurable speed.
At least Hypersonic flight speed (Flew from New Delhi to Metropolis, which even if assumed to have taken him a whole hour would still require him to have flown at about Mach 9.7. Flew too quickly for a barrage of artillery fire from all sides to hit him)
Lifting Strength: At least Class K (As an extremely powerful Martian, should be a good bit stronger than Bane, and in direct physical showings appears to be at least equal to Wonder Woman, who considers him "super-strong." Grappled with Etrigan, who could lift and tip over a train. Grappled evenly with Metallo, who could lift and throw a train car as well as toss a bus and an oil truck. Should be comparable to Miss Martian, who stopped a speeding train. Lifted a massive metal plate. While weakened by the fire it emitted, tore a huge metal turbine off of Vandal Savage's futuristic fighter jet. Bent metal bars. Effortlessly crushed a stone tablet in one hand), likely Class M (As mentioned above, is likely equal to/superior to Wonder Woman. Despite being overtly comparable to Grundy in striking strength, it's unknown if he directly scales to his lifting strength, which is sufficient to tear a tank in two. Likely stronger than Booster Gold, whose super-suit made him strong enough to hold himself and a civilian in place against a gravitational anomaly that sucked in a building despite the building being farther from the epicenter of the phenomenon than Booster himself)
Striking Strength: Multi-Continent Class to Planet Class
Durability: Multi-Continental to Planet Level (Should scale to his own AP as per Newton's Third Law. Has taken some attacks from his physical rivals Metamorpho and Etrigan, as well as a palm strike from Solomon Grundy, whose strength is slightly greater than his. He has a handful of durability antifeats, such as being hurt by a Wall Level explosion that was a good distance away from him (which is incredibly bizarre), but as with basically every other DCAU character these can be written off since J'onn has more consistently performed and scaled to feats astronomically higher than these low-ends), higher with Shapeshifting (Could turn his body metallic, allowing him to no-sell a punch from Etrigan who could harm his normal form) and Density Manipulation (Rich Fogel, a writer on Justice League, described his blue aura as him becoming more dense to withstand attacks better)
Stamina: Superhuman (Kept using his telepathy whilst experiencing an excruciatingly painful sensation, which he described as "as if a million universes are forcing their way into my mind all at once." Kept fighting the Imperium while its tentacle was piercing into his brain, grabbing said tentacle and using it to drag the Imperium into the light of day - he's even later clarified to be weakened whilst he does this. Turned intangible and attacked Luthor after being electrocuted to the point that every member of the JL, when faced with this same electric shock, was howling in pain)
Range: Several Meters physically (Stretched across a hallway to attack a soldier), Several Meters to Tens of Meters with Shapeshifting (Turned into a massive dragon while fighting Metamorpho), at least Kilometers if not Tens of Kilometers with Mental Attacks (Was able to mentally devastate Superman while the latter was in his Metropolis apartment and J'onn was in a faraway secret facility - it's true this wasn't an intentional mental attack, but it stands to reason his actual mental attacks would have similar range), and Interstellar with Telepathy (Sensed John Stewart's emotions from an interstellar distance away. Summoned Green Lantern to Earth telepathically while GL was on “Rigel IX,” implying he was on a planet that orbits the star Rigel - which is 863 light years away from Earth. While on the Watchtower, detected Batman's thoughts as well as his precise location while the latter was on Earth's surface. Felt the pain of the Justice League (who were in Metropolis) whilst in India), possibly Interdimensional or higher (Detected the homing signal from the Mirrored Room (which exists beyond time and space), albeit while there was a direct vortex between his location and the Mirrored Room)
Intelligence: At least Gifted, with notable combat prowess (Could comprehend and withstand widespread Multiversal Destruction. Along with Mister Terrific, ran the Watchtower for most of JLU. Performed surgery on a near-death Kilowog and brought him back to near-perfect health in less than a day. Was a prominent soldier in the battle against the Imperium's army for many years, and has many years of being a superhero under his belt, fighting countless powerful threats. Expertly uses his unique powers to defeat foes, such as using his intangibility to make ships fire on each other in their attempts to hit him, using a mental attack on Etrigan mid-combat to incapacitate him, becoming a puddle of liquid metal to take his foes by surprise, among other examples)
Standard Equipment: None Notable
Optional Equipment:
- Space Suit: A silver-and-gold suit that J'onn has worn on space missions. It's unknown why he needs it, however.
Standard Tactics: Moves to physically incapacitate his foes as quickly as possible, as seen in his fights against Grundy and Parademons.
Weaknesses: Is deathly afraid of fire. Electricity interferes with his intangibility, as seen when he encountered Livewire as well as his encounter with the Ultra-Humanite. Cannot detect anyone while they're within a stasis field.
Note: Despite the fact that Superman vs Martian Manhunter is a hotly contested topic for the main DC comics continuity, the DCAU makes it very clear that Superman is far stronger than Martian Manhunter, to the point that I personally don't scale the Manhunter to Superman's full strength. Firstly, Bruce Timm himself discussed J'onn's strength at the 2001 San Diego Comic Con, saying "And (J'onn)'s strong, but he's not quite as strong as Superman. He's not nearly in that class." Secondly, Darkseid's Omega Beams oneshot J'onn during "Twilight" - Superman kept fighting immediately after being hit with Omega Beams in that same episode, and on other occasions has withstood said beams while retaining consciousness and even pushed them back into Darkseid's eyes with pure strength. Thirdly, as discussed above, J'onn was a physical match for Metallo, who as discussed in his profile is nowhere near as powerful as Superman. In addition, Superman put Supergirl into a coma with just a few punches during "Legacy" - Supergirl being relative to Galatea, who could smash apart Steel's armor, an armor so tough that Metallo couldn't even dent it. Scaling both Superman and Martian Manhunter to Solomon Grundy doesn't function, as Superman holds back in all of his fights with the hulking zombie, and despite Superman holding back and being magic weakened by the magic that animated Grundy, Grundy is verbatim no match for Superman, which is further proven by Superman being capable of holding out against Grundy during "Wake the Dead" after Grundy had become far more powerful than he ever was when alive and then received an additional power up via absorbing some of AMAZO's energy. The "Only a Dream" statement of Pre-Resurrection Grundy being as strong as both Superman and Martian Manhunter would only be partially true - Superman is proven to be superior to both MMH and Grundy, and thus all we could take from that statement, in my opinion, is that Martian Manhunter is about as strong as Grundy, which is consistent.
Note 2: Bruce Timm has stated that the original DCAU tie-in comics are not canon, with the only tie in comics that have statements to the contrary (other than Batman: The Adventures Continue, which has so many continuity issues that it's essentially impossible to argue it's canon) being Justice League Infinity, the Batman and Harley Quinn tie in comics, and specifically the first annual of Batman Adventures. Ergo, I only consider those three comics canon.
