Summary[]
In 1835, an early and interesting form of fake news made the rounds in a New York paper named "The Sun". It suggested that astronomer John Herschel, known for many real space breakthroughs, had invented a type of telescope capable of viewing the surface of the moon, and that these discoveries had been given to The Sun by a fictional companion of his named Andrew Grant. It describes strange forms of bison and beaver, but strangest of all a human-like civilisation in the moon - half man, half bat, named Vespertilio-homo. The widespread success of this hoax lead to its title becoming "The Great Moon Hoax".
